SQL Tuning Workshop – Carlos Sierra and Mauro Pagano, Accenture Enkitec Group
For the past two years, Oracle ACE Director, Carlos Sierra, and Oracle ACE, Mauro Pagano, have delivered this workshop at User Group Conferences and every time I ask about it, the feedback from organizers and participants is the same. It is awesome!
I really like their approach using Case Studies where techniques, tips, tricks, and tools are applied to guide participants towards possible solutions.
12 Things Developers Will Love About Oracle Database 12c Release 2 – Chris Saxon, Oracle Corporation
In this session, Chris gives you an overview of the changes to SQL and PL/SQL that will help you build faster, more robust database applications. I’m really interested on understanding how the new external table parameter override, validation conversion, and cast default on error features work.
Alexa! How Do You Work with Oracle REST Data Services? – Jonathan Dixon, Cloud Nueva
In this session, I really want to see how Jonathan can use Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS) as the gateway to and the Oracle Database as the engine behind Alexa skills to lookup information.
Track-a-Watt: Modify a Power Usage Tracker to Log Your Power Usage in a Database – Blaine Carter, Oracle Corporation
This should be a great example of how to get started with a small IOT project. Blaine will cover how to simplify the data ingestion by taking advantage of a REST interface to a cloud database. Then a walk through creating a table for the data and enabling a RESTful service on it, followed by how to post data to the new service.
A Real-World Comparison of the NoPlsql and Thick Database Paradigms – Bryn Llewellyn and Toon Koppelaars, Oracle Corporation
Bryn and Toon will describe the problems brought by the NoPlsql paradigm. They will discuss its performance implications and debunk the myth that moving business logic out of the data tier and into the middle tier improves performance and scalability.
Galo says “These sessions are a must see for Developers, Architects and IT Managers!”

He specializes in the design and performance of the Social Services Applications that support several state programs such as Medicaid Managed Care, Medicare, Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, and CHIP. Galo is an Oracle ACE and a frequent speaker at Oracle and user group conferences including Oracle OpenWorld, RMOUG Training Days and ODTUG Kscope. Galo is an ODTUG volunteer and he has served as Kscope16 and Kscope17 Database Track Lead, Kscope abstract reviewer since 2013, and as part of the team that coordinates activities for the Database Community.
Galo’s first Kscope was in San Antonio in 2012. He has attended every year since, and he hopes to continue for years to come. Galo commented, “My favorite Kscope so far has been Kscope15 in Hollywood, FL. It’s hard to beat a setup where you have the beach next to the conference venue. I remember having a tough time deciding between getting into the ocean or attending sessions!”
Each year, Galo comes back to Kscope because of the great content and being able to connect with people who share the same interests. At Kscope17, Galo is excited to see how the Conference Committee surprises everyone on Wednesday night during the ODTUG 20th Birthday Celebration. He said, “Things keep getting better every year!”
